What watches we buy

We see a wide range of timepieces. Categories include:

  1. Luxury Swiss and Japanese watches from recognized makers. Mechanical, automatic, and quartz movements. Boxes and papers help when you have them. Pieces without paperwork are welcome.
  2. Vintage watches. Hand wound, automatic, and dress watches from the mid 20th century onward. Patina, original dials, and period correct details matter to the offer.
  3. Gold watches and watches with precious metal cases or bracelets. The case metal is part of the evaluation alongside the movement and the maker.
  4. Diamond watches and watches with gemstone bezels, dials, or bracelets. The stones are evaluated alongside the watch itself.
  5. Estate and inherited watches. Single pieces or full collections.
  6. Watches that no longer run, are missing crowns or crystals, or have minor damage. Bring them in. The evaluation is free.

If your watch does not fit one of these categories, bring it in. The evaluation is free and there is no obligation to sell.

How a watch evaluation works

Walk in any time during business hours. The evaluation happens at our counter, in front of you.

Our jeweler looks at the brand, the model, the reference and serial numbers, the case metal, the movement, the dial and hands, the bracelet or strap, the overall condition, and the service history if you have records. We compare what is in front of us to the current market for that specific model and configuration. For a deeper read on how luxury watches hold value over time, see how luxury watches perform as an investment.

When the evaluation is done, the offer is written down. You decide whether to accept, walk away, or come back later. We do not pressure, and we do not talk a watch down to lower the offer.

Selling a watch with papers and without papers

Boxes, papers, warranty cards, and service receipts make the offer tighter and faster because they confirm authenticity and history. They are not required. Most of the watches we see come in without the original box.

If you only have the watch itself, we still evaluate authenticity from the watch in front of us. For a sense of what authentic details to look for, see how to spot a fake luxury watch. If your watch has a precious metal case or bracelet, see understanding the value of platinum and precious metal watches for context on how the metal factors into the offer.

Vintage, inherited, and estate watches

Vintage watches are part of what we see most weeks. Older dress watches, mid century chronographs, and inherited dress watches from family estates all carry value that goes beyond the metal alone. Original dials, original hands, and period correct details often add real money to the offer.

For estate visits, you can bring a single piece or a full collection. There is no pressure to sell during the visit, and a written offer can be taken home to consider. For context on what makes certain pieces especially collectible, see our overview of collectible watches.

Sell vs pawn a watch

Selling and pawning are two different transactions. When you sell, the watch becomes ours and you walk out with cash. When you pawn, the watch becomes collateral on a short term loan, and you can redeem it later. Selling pays more on day one because there is no risk. Pawning lets you keep the watch if you redeem inside the loan window.

Most people who walk in with a watch already know which one they want. If you are not sure, our decision guide on pawn vs sell covers the trade offs. For a broader view of selling at a Chicago pawn shop, see the full guide to selling jewelry in Chicago.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an appointment to sell a watch?

No. Drop in any time during business hours. If you have several watches, a high value piece, or a full estate, calling ahead helps us set aside time for a thorough evaluation.

Will you buy a watch without the box or papers?

Yes. Boxes, papers, and service records make the offer tighter and faster, but most of the watches we see do not come with the original box. Our jeweler evaluates authenticity, condition, and market value from the watch itself.

How do you decide what a watch is worth?

The brand, the model, the reference and serial numbers, the case metal, the movement, the dial and hands, the bracelet or strap, the overall condition, and the service history all factor in. The current market for that specific model on the day you visit determines the final offer.

Do you buy watches that no longer run?

Yes. Watches that no longer run, are missing crowns or crystals, or have minor damage can still hold real value when the maker and the movement are recognized. Bring them in for a free evaluation.

What should I bring to my visit?

A government issued photo ID, the watch itself, and any boxes, papers, warranty cards, or service receipts that came with it. None of those documents are required, but they help when they are present.

When you are ready to sell a watch in Chicago, walk in to our Lincoln Park shop during business hours. The evaluation is free, the offer is written, and there is no pressure to sell.
